Sasolburg at a glance

The large town of Sasolburg is located in the northern part of the Free State, bordering Mpumalanga and Gauteng and conveniently situated a mere hour’s drive away from Johannesburg and 95km from O.R Tambo International Airport. Resting on the banks of the Vaal River, it forms one part of the Vaal Triangle, with Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging.

Sasolburg is known for its industry, in particular its oil refinery, which is one of the only working coal-derived refineries in the world. This town owes its existence and name to the South African Coal, Oil and Gas Corporation (SASOL) who created the town to provide employees with housing, schooling and other amenities. Since its establishment in 1954, it has grown to house a population of around 34 000 people. However, Sasolburg’s economy still firmly relies on Sasol Chemical Industries - as it contributes between 50-60 percent of the town’s GGP. 

Property Market 

Sasolburg is attracting increasing amounts of out-of-town-buyers who are drawn to this town due to its close-knit community feel, nearby amenities and employment opportunities.  While there is a steady stream of demand for residential properties, the market has attracted many first-time buyers due to the affordability of Sasolburg property. With two bedroom flats starting at R65 000 and three bedroom houses starting at R750 000 – the property market presents buyers with several residential property options for under R1million.

Over the years SASOL and other big companies in the area such as; Karbochem, Omnia Fertilizer and Dow Plastics have invested billions into developments and the maintenance of the town’s infrastructure. With great public services, brilliant healthcare facilities, educational institutions, entertaining attractions and several shopping malls – Sasolburg is the ideal destination for convenient living.

Sasolburg High School

The current Sasolburg High School building was established in 1982 and has since become one of the top semi-private, bilingual school’s in South Africa. By keeping their classrooms ‘small’ – 25 learners per teacher- enables them to provide every child with individual attention.

Their 100% pass rate speaks for itself, their faculty of dedicated teachers and staff utilises the latest and most innovative teaching methods – achieving continuous academic success on a national and provincial level.The school also offers learners various academic and cultural activities as well as several sports. These include; netball, rugby, badminton, archery, Olympiads, debate, public speaking and much, much more.

Vaal Mall

Situated 10 minutes outside of Sasolburg, the Vaal Mall can be found in the heart of the Vaal Triangle. The centre offers shoppers more than a 100 fashion and retail stores, as well as a food court, sit down restaurants, several bank services and enough parking for 3 000 vehicles. Anchor stores in the Vaal Mall include; Game, Pick’n’Pay, Woolworths and Edgars.

Restaurants

Redwoods

Opening its doors in 1980, Redwoods has become one of the longest running restaurants in the Vaal Triangle and is known as a landmark in Sasolburg.  Located in the town’s CBD, near the Etienne Rossouw Theatre, its old-timey atmosphere and family friendly service is a favourite among locals. 
Offering diners delicious dishes such as oxtail, potjies and their legendary lazy aged steaks, Redwoods is definitely an eatery to take the family to.

The Shack

Located 500m from the banks of the Vaal River, this typical South African eatery will serve up friendly service, a relaxed atmosphere and mouth-watering dishes.  Founded in 2010, The Shack can house up to 400 people and is the perfect place to watch a sports game on the weekend.  This venue also boasts a manicured garden, outdoor kid’s playground and covered dining area – as well as live entertainment and a fully stocked jukebox.

Etienne Rousseau Theatre

The award winning  Etienne Rousseau Theatre has been part of the Sasolburg community for almost five decades. It has staged many successful productions and has played host to some of the best local and international performing artists. Designed as a multi-purpose theatre residents of Sasolburg and neighbouring areas have been privy regular ballets, operas, dramas and various musical performances. Be sure to attend one of these performances if you find yourself in Sasolburg – you will not be disappointed.

Emerald Resort & Casino

15 minutes from Sasolburg and overlooking the Vaal River, the Emerald Resort & Casino provides visitors with heaps of fun activities. This is a one-stop destination for passing the time with much more on offer than just the casino, which houses 24 gaming tables, countless slot machines and a member’s lounge.

Guests and visitors can indulge in the beauty of their surroundings and go on a drive through the Animal World Game Park where giraffes and zebras roam freely or look at the 500 different species of animals housed at the Animal World Zoo. Kids will love the Aquadome and Kidzone – designed to keep them entertained for hours.

Vaal Dam

As South Africa’s second largest dam,forming part of the Vaal River that spans across three provinces (Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Free State), it has been a popular destination for water sport enthusiasts and tourists for decades.  This is the perfect place to spend some time with the family or go for a boat cruise on its calm waters.
