History
The area was originally inhabited by SAN tribes and later by Sotho-Tswana communities. Stone-walled ruins can still be found in the area. Also included in the reserve are a wide variety of fauna including larger game species.
Turffontein was the largest concentration camp in Johannesburg and was located where the Turffontein Race Course is now, and housed 5000 people. The 700 who died of that group were buried on a farm called Klipriviers Berg in Winchester Hills.
