Garden Route
A strip of land like no other in the world, where majestic mountain ranges and an unrivalled shoreline sandwich a natural garden of colourful vistas, where ancient forests, rivers and lakes, dunes and valleys merge to form a landscape of awe-inspiring beauty.
The big-hearted little town of George, otherwise known as "The Gateway to the Garden Route", graces this coastal plateau in a fertile area of lush greenery. A sophisticated infrastructure, an easygoing approach and enviable lifestyle is enhanced by gracious golfing estates - embracing two of the top ten golf courses in the country - sprawling homesteads on prosperous farmland and country homes making full use of this adventure and eco-paradise.
Peppered along this coastline, fashionable seaside resorts mingle with small coastal villages on beautiful beaches and craggy bays. Contemporary mansions perch high above the beautiful Bahia Formosa of Plettenberg Bay, and Cape Cod style homes encircle the waterways of Knysna. Now a summer playground to the "mink and manure" set, these trendy destinations come alive with cocktails and crayfish, oysters and champagne at polo matches and on lagoon-moored yachts.
In stark contrast, charming log-cabined villages and artists' hamlets offer inspiration to a burgeoning creative community; quaint but enormously popular markets provide the opportunity for the many organic farmers and home-based industry owners to sell their wares, and the silent forests offer peace and serenity for those seeking solitude and escape.
The Garden Route region runs along the coastline from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, a small coastal city on South Africa's south east coast. ??The region has become South Africa's most popular tourist destination after Cape Town to which visitors are drawn year-round to its indigenous forests, freshwater lakes, wetlands and untouched beaches.
The region has some of the largest sections of indigenous forest in the country - giant yellowwood trees and wildflowers - as well as commercial plantations of eucalyptus and pine. ??Highlights of the Garden Route include the leafy Wilderness coastal stretch, Knysna's lagoon and indigenous forest as well as its annual marathon and oyster festival, Plettenberg Bay, a town that offers holidaymakers beautiful beaches and excellent surf.
The Garden Route is ideal for watersports and outdoor activities, and the region's moderate climate, often compared to that of Hawaii in parts, is ideal for these activities. With an existing airport at George and extensions to the small airport of Plettenberg Bay there are now more frequent, affordable flights servicing the Garden Route and internationals as well as locals are being encouraged to relocate to this region.
Upmarket, golfing, polo and residential estates have assisted in brining much attention to the Garden Route which is now as much of a sporting destination as a residential and holiday option.
