Kenton on Sea, also referred to as "The Jewel of the Sunshine Coast", is blessed by having two pristine, tidal rivers on the east and west boundaries, namely the Kariega and Bushmansriver, the Bushmansriver being the second longest navigable tidal river in South Africa, a distance of 33 kilometres.
The seaside is protected by a nature reserve, the "Joan Muirhead Nature Reserve" this preserves the pristine coastline along the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
Kenton on Sea was founded in 1946 and has become one of the most sought after holiday destinations in South Africa, however still retaining its quaint seaside atmosphere with some of the original cottages still in use, as well as luxurious riverside dwelling with private boathouses and jetties.
Kenton on Sea is blessed by having a rugged coastline on the warm Indian Ocean, numerous coves and bays providing sheltered and safe bathing.
Shelley bay must be one of the most beautiful and safe bathing spots in South Africa.
Kenton on Sea boasts a "Blue Flag Beach" being the Kariega beach at the mouth of the river of the same name.
The river has a fine lagoon for children to amuse themselves, large expanses of deep water for water sports, with river banks of unspoilt riverine bush with abundant game and bird life. Fine fishing is available in the river and sea with a secure boat launch area.
Over the past few years game lodges have sprung up on the banks of the two rivers, a trip up the river usually includes sightings of game with the possibility of seeing the big five from the safety of your boat!
An interesting landmark at Kenton on Sea being two large norfolk pine trees at the highest point, appropriately named Norfolk Ridge. These trees are recorded on all British admiralty charts as "Trees Conspic". The trees being on the site of the now demolished hotel which was partly constructed from the timber of a wreck of a sailing ship "the Volo".
Kenton on Sea is an attractive destination for holiday makers, with Grahamstown being 55 kilometres away, with their fine private schools, St. Andrews, diocesan school for girls and Kingswood, many property owners having children at boarding school in Grahamstown and use their properties not only for holidays but also when visiting their children.
