Mdantsane is historically the second biggest township in South Africa, situated between East London and King Williams Town in the Eastern Cape. Mdantsane is historically a lower income area with 74% of households earning less than the subsistence level.

Mdantsane is divided into eighteen zones which are ever expanding, with the newest unit known as Unit.P. The zones are named numerically in the chronological order of their establishment. The central market in N.U. 2 (Zone 2) district is called "The Hi-Way". It is named after the Qumza Highway, being the main road running through Mdantsane from East London's city centre to the industrial area or Fort Jackson.  

There are currently three Malls in Mdantsane  - The Kuyase mall, Shoprite Checkers Mall and Mdantsane City Mall. Six service stations and the Highway Central Business District form  the main regional taxi hubs.

Mdantsane is also known as the home of boxing, as this where the boxing world champions (Happyboy Mgxaji, Welcome Ncita and Vuyani Bungu) hail from. A boxing museum is planned for Mdantsane contributing to the arts, culture and recreational facilities.  The plan to open the museum in the Mdantsane central business district was inspired by the fact that Mdantsane is a mecca of boxing, with many boxing champions hailing from the township.  There is a large sports stadium within the suburb which hosts rugby, soccer and other matches.

In post aprtheid South Africa much has been much done to beautify this suburb and improve the infrastructure.  Cecilia Makiwane Hospital is also situated in Mdantsane This facility was named after the first black nurse registered during the apartheid period. A multi million rand library is under construction in NU 14, and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2011.  The Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre, an impressive looking complex built by the Sports Trust, was developed in order to encourage a variety of sports activities.

Mdantsane properties are sought after by first time buyers and investors, as properties are affordable. The average price of properties sold in Mdantsane range between R300.000-R350. 000.  Areas like NU 17 provide middle income housing where properties range.
