Paarl, in the Western Cape Winelands was first settled by French Huguenot farmers in 1688. The town itself was only established in 1720 with the construction of the NG Church. In 1800 there were still only about 30 houses situated along Paarl's Main Road. Before the construction of the first railway line in 1863 between Cape Town and Wellington Paarl developed relatively slowly. However once the railways were in full swing on this route, trade and development flourished. Paarl became world-famous for it's carriage, cart and wagon making in the late 1800s and farming in the area continued to flourish.
