Parkwood lies north of the city centre, nestled between the leafy suburbs of Saxonwold, Rosebank, Parktown North and Parkview.  Lower Parkwood, to the west of Jan Smuts Ave borders the beautiful Zoo Lake Park, a popular green space for joggers, dog walkers and family outings.

With easy access to motorways and the CBDs of Johannesburg, Rosebank and Sandton, Parkwood is perfectly positioned around business, educational and recreational facilities.  Many well established private schools are within easy reach including the Ridge, St Katherine's, St John's, Roedean, Jan Celliers, Pridwin, Kingsmead and the German School.

There are also excellent public schools and educational facilities for children with special needs.  Furthermore, the Universities of the Witwatersrand (WITS) and Johannesburg as well as other specialised tertiary institutions are also close by.

The close proximity of schools, parks, shopping malls, places of worship and business districts makes Parkwoodthe suburb of choice for families. The Gautrain rapid rail system, linking Johannesburg to Pretoria and ORT International Airport have also added value to the suburb.

The Saxonwold and Parkwood Residents Association (SAPRA) is one of the oldest and most successful residents associations in the area and focus their efforts mainly aroundsecurity.

There are approximately 650 properties in Parkwood, 320 of which are in Upper Parkwood and 230 in Lower Parkwood.  Annual sales over the past few years average around 48.  The main reasons for sales are young families ‘up scaling' to larger properties or ‘empty nesters' downsizing.  Parkwood Property remains in constant demand for the many previously mentioned reasons.  Prices also vary enormously.

History

Parkwood is one of Johannesburg's older, more established and attractive suburbs. It was developed in the early 1900s and derived its name from its close proximity to the Herman Eckstein Park (Zoo Lake Park) and the abundance of trees in the area.

The original houses in Parkwood were built in the 1920s and 1930s on stands of approximately 1000 square metres. Although many of these remain, many have been extensively enlarged and renovated to provide for the needs of today's families.
