Childproofing your home

The journey of first-time parenting is mired with trial and tribulation. Through the anxiety, fear and worry - not to mention bombardments of conflicting advice from the self-proclaimed experts - new parents often feel desperately unprepared.
What must be remembered, though, is the joy of starting a family. It’s a happy time; a time to be celebrated, and the worry of preparation in anticipation of the bundle of joy, need not be a factor that sullies the elation of humanity’s greatest miracle.
Here are some hints and tips from Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty. They’re simple, to ensure your home is a safe haven and to relieve the anxiety so you can concentrate on welcoming your baby.
The Nursery
Decorating the nursery is part of the process. However, it is advisable for precautions to be taken, especially with newly painted nurseries.
Some studies show that the fumes emitted by paint - including the environmentally friendly kind - are potentially dangerousand harmful to an unborn child.
We recommend that once you have chosen your colour scheme, have someone else paint the room and avoid the fresh paint for at least 2 days.
Cleaning Products
Although most household cleaning products are acceptable for usage during pregnancy, one can never be too careful.
Avoid products with ‘toxic’ on the label. They may contain solutions which are potentially harmful to your baby.
Use websites that sell and advise on environmentally friendly cleaning products. Alternatively, we recommend that you use homemade cleaning products. A mixture of vinegar and baking soda, for example, is the perfect cleaning solution for just about anything in your home.
Bath Protection
Keeping balance in the bathroom calls for safety on all levels. We recommend that in addition to getting assistance when taking a bath or shower, bar railings should be installed.
Home Baby Proofing
Take advantage of the time before the baby comes, to childproof your home.
Beware of sharp corners, electrical sockets and low lying fragile objects. Buy cabinet locks, corner pads and all childproofing gadgets to keep baby safe.
Before you know it, your little person will be arriving, and nothing should distract you when you can spend all your time celebrating the new addition.
