Rondebosch Sectional
Rondebosch is the oldest suburb in Cape Town and has many heritage sites. The first crops were grown along the banks of the Liesbeek River (then know as Amstel or Versse River) in 1656. A circular grove of thorn trees, or Ronde Doorn Bosje, on the bank or the river was turned into a kraal. In 1657 the first people were given ‘free burgher' (free citizen) status and given land along the river, the area is now known as Rondebosch. The Fountain at the intersection or Main and Belmont Roads is considered the ‘centre' of Rondebosch. The Fountain is an ornamental trough used for watering horses.
It was declared a national monument in 1964. The well that the water was drawn from is on the grounds of one the oldest and most prestigious apartment blocks in Rondebosch called Southbrooke. The Groote Schuur Estate is the Presidential home and has been the official residence of the country's leaders since 1911. The Baxter Theatre was opened in 1977 and is the cultural hub of Rondebosch. Rhodes Memorial was built in honour of Cecil John Rhodes. Locals and visitors enjoy this beautiful area with its beautiful walks, picnics and restaurants that are very popular.
