Durban at a glance

Durban is the largest city in KwaZulu Natal and a popular spot due to all year round balmy weather. Residents can enjoy various attractions such as the Gateway Theatre of shopping, various weekly markets, the Moses Mabhida Stadium, nature reserves and much more. Its port is one of the busiest in South Africa and one of the largest in the world.

Glenwood

As one of Durban’s oldest suburbs, Glenwood has homes that vary between sturdy, heritage-rich colonial style mansions right the way through to smaller, student housing properties which garner their popularity from the close proximity of the Durban CBD and the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The sedate suburb is predominantly inhabited by academics, owing to the proximity of the university. Artists, designers and the like have given the neighbourhood a ‘trendy’ vibe. Adding to this is Davenport, Bulwer and Ferguson Roads, where antique and various other shops, restaurants, cafes and the KZNSA Gallery have opened and accumulated a loyal following. Within the KZNSA Gallery is a gallery that exhibits contemporary visual culture, a shop, a café and a training art programme. Davenport Road in particular has flourished since the conversion of old, Victorian style homes into trendy eateries and can be compared to the likes of Melville in Johannesburg.

Surrounding convenient and important amenities include the Kind Edward VIII Hospital, conveniently situated along the R102, which cruises straight through the Southern part of the suburb. A short way from Glenwood is the Congella train stop, providing safe, convenient and accessible public transport to and from multiple destinations. There are schools within the suburb and nearby for children of all ages, including Durban Girls High School, situated along Penzance Road.

The neighbourly atmosphere, together with the flourishing tree-lined streets make Glenwood an ideal place to live. It is a serene and hideaway type area compared to the hive of activity within the beachside suburbs and Durban city bowl.
