Yzerfontein at a glance
Yzerfontein is a small harbour town whose name directly translates into “Iron Fountain”. This little fishing town has a community that is friendly, welcoming and passionate about their area.
Although the town is small, there are many attractions in and around the area. The small bay has fishing boats, pleasure boats and jet-skis along with kite-boarders, surfers, kayakers and swimmers, so there are many activities to take part in if you enjoy water sports. The 16 mile beach is perfect for long walks and site seeing as the view of Table Mountain is prominent and the seasonal flowers are a beautiful edition to the pristine beaches.
If you are a sea food lover, the local fisherman find themselves catching crayfish and fish and collect muscles that are later sold to local restaurants like the Beaches Restaurant whose menu highlights the delicious seafood, one dish being the popular seafood curry. The view of the restaurant is spectacular and highly relaxing as the beach is your backdrop and the sea is your soundtrack.
If you fancy wine tasting and would like to visit a wine estate every now and then, the Darling Wine Estates is part of the Darling Wine Route. Due to the weather the region produces fabulous quality wine. Local labels include Tukulu, Darling Cellars and Groote Post. This wine route, lovers of sauvignon blanc, shiraz and pinotage will be most-rewarded. If you are looking for a bite to eat after a fabulous wine tasting then Hilda’s Kitchen and Lelieblom Farm are recommended, serving the most authentic country cuisine in Darling.
If you get excited by an adrenaline rush or your children do, then the Ridge Riders Sandboarding is situated at the Atlantis Dunes in Cape Town. It is a trip you can take on the weekend where you you will find yourself riding the white sand dunes. Whether you lie down or stand up the experience is like no other. Grab your sunblock and your sunglasses and head to the dunes for day time fun.
The area does not have any local schools, however the closest schools are not too far away, situated in Darling, Langebaan, Blouberg and Saldanha. Langebaan is situated 41 minutes away with Longacres Private School. This school’s mission is to strive to reach your child's full potential, developing them both academically and creatively. The school has a Christian ethos but embraces other religions.
Once your child has matriculated the two most renowned universities are located in the Western Cape. The first being UCT, an hour away from Yzerfontein, which can be a long distance, unless your child qualifies for res. Student housing is also not difficult to find as many students have come from overseas and other places around South Africa. The second being Stellenbosch University which is situated an hour and half away. This university has many res’ that your child can apply to as well as many student homes where your child will learn independence and budgeting. Both universities offer a range of different courses that will fit your child’s needs.
The houses in the area accommodate a variety of different tastes which include country styled Farm houses that are valued from 3mil to 10 mil. The houses in this area also include sea side homes which also range from smaller 4 bedroom houses to 8 bedroom mansions that have breathtaking views and are perfect for settling in and starting a family.
