Leisure Isle's history: uncover the backstory

Steenbok Island was under British Colonial Government ownership until 1821. It was then ceded to George Rex, who held it until 1929. American George Cearn, who had made a fortune in coffee in Kenya, purchased it for £7,000. At 53, he and his wife Ethel retired to Knysna and he embarked on a surprising venture. He envisioned transforming the island into a residential paradise, naming it Leisure Isle, defying expectations and working to make his dream a reality.

During the 1950s, much of Leisure Isle's interior remained covered in scrub and bush, and wildlife like steenbok and introduced pheasants from England could still be spotted. In 1951, a Village Management Council was established, overseen by the Divisional Council, which managed the island's affairs until 1968. As challenges related to water, electricity and essential services arose, the Knysna Municipality took over, a move that faced resistance from many residents. Despite the initial opposition, over the next five decades, Leisure Isle transformed into the unique and cherished place it is today.
