Tongaat, derives its name from the uThongathi River, with roots in Zulu, meaning 'significant to us' or 'our importance to you.' This reflects legends of defiance and Shaka's magnanimity when subjugating a tribe. On 1 October 2010, Tongaat was renamed oThongathi.
