Paarl at a glance

The historical town, Paarl, situated in the Cape Winelands, approximately 60 kilometres from Cape Town is named after the gleaming rock (second largest granite boulder in the world) on the mountain under which it is nestled.
It is the third oldest European Settlement in South Africa, the Dutch settlers was first issued land here in 1687.  In 1688 the French Huguenots arrived in Cape Town and with their knowledge of vineyards and fruit growing, the fertile soil and the Mediterranean-like climate of the area, has grown Paarl into a world renowned wine region and also the head quarter of the KWV as well as Ceres Fruit Juices.
Paarl is home to a prosperous and culturally diverse community and the product of a unique history descending from Khoisan, African-, and Eastern Slaves, Dutch, French Huguenots, Jewish immigrants, Italian prisoners of war and Xhosa migrant labourers. A unique cultural attraction in Paarl is the fact that foundation of the Afrikaans language was laid here and tribute to that is the Afrikaans Language Monument on the slopes of Paarl Mountain.
Paarl is the largest town in the Cape Winelands and is the seat of the Drakenstein Municipality. Paarl also gained international attention with Nelson Mandela’s walk to freedom on the 11th of February 1990, when he was released from the Victor Verster Correctional Services.
