The areas of Craighall and Craighall Park were established in the late 1800s early
1900s as numerous pieces of Craighall real estate became available. The Braamfontein Spruit and the lake situated on it, plus the extra fertile soil created the perfect land to establish garden markets. In fact, much of the fresh produce in early Johannesburg was supplied from Craighall and Craighall Park.
Much of the original property for sale in Craighall was bought by Scottish families with the most well-known family being the Rattrays. This family established a guest house, which later became the Hyde Park Hotel and is now where the Colony Shopping Centre is situated. The guesthouse saw early Johannesburg  residents coming for a quiet week-end to while away time fishing, boating and picnicking near the lake. Unfortunately, over the years the lake has silted over, but there are still many remnants that remind us of this time such as the oak trees planted by Mr Rattray and Rattray's weir.
